Terrestrial community ecology.

The main emphasis within community ecology is on the dynamics of plant communities and on the maintenance of species diversity. The major project has been the small-scale dynamics and pattern of species-rich grassland (cooperation with Ejvind Rosén and Renate Huber), field layer vegetation in deciduous forests on Öland (cooperation with Camilla Wessberg) and boreal forests in Sweden and Russia (cooperation with Alexandr A. Maslov). The significance of regeneration with seed has been studied, particularly temporal and spatial variation in seedling recruitment and variation in recruitment caused by microsite variation. Theories on the maintenance of species diversity have been tested by means of fertilization, irrigation and shading experiments - in cooperation with Robert K. Peet (Chapell Hill, NC) and Jo H. Willems (Utrecht, NL). The 'carousel model' has been formulated to describe high rates of species mobility and turnover in microsites within the community. The concept of species pool has been elaborated and quantified in both species-rich grasslands and woodlands (with Martin Diekmann, Cecilia Dupré). Theoretical studies on plant strategy types and plant functional types have been carried out in cooperation with Vladimir Onipchenko and Galina Semenova (Moskva) and Gudrun Bornette (Lyon). Some concluding papers on the Öland project are in preparation. An integrated approach to multivariate analyis of data on vegetation and environment was elaborated in the computer program package VEGRON with Latzi Fresco (Groningen) and Ewa Kazmierczak (Torun). A multi-author textbook on Vegetation Ecology will soon be finished. Future activities will be mainly concerned with historical and theoretical studies and advise to colleagues.
